ABSTRACT An analytical solution for the interaction of cylindrical inhomogeneities in a complex potential was obtained using the analytical element method. This method utilizes expansions in the Laurent and Taylor series for the outer and inner parts, respectively, of each cylindrical inhomogeneity. The availability of individual solutions allowed the application of the superposition principle to obtain the solution of the flow problem in terms of discharge potential. This representation, however, required an iterative method for determining the coefficients of the series expansions, which used the minimum value for the absolute differences between successive iterations and a maximum number of iterations as a stop criterion. The implementation of the algorithm was performed in Python language v 3.6.7 and the numerical results after analysis of the convergence are presented in graphs containing the set of inhomogeneities used and their influence on the behavior of flow lines and potentials. These, through the precision and detail obtained, showed the ability of the MEA to characterize flow and identify preferred channels, evidencing its applicability to real situations.

RESUMO O efeito da interação do conjunto de inomogeneidades cilíndricas no potencial complexo em campo uniforme foi analisado por meio da solução proveniente do método de elementos analíticos. Esta, por sua vez, foi obtida por meio das expansões em Série de Laurent e Série de Taylor nas partes exterior e interior, respectivamente, de cada inomogeneidade cilíndrica. O formalismo do método de elementos analíticos, baseado no princípio da superposição, permitiu obter a solução do escoamento em termos de potencial de descarga. A determinação dos coeficientes complexos direcionou para a escolha de um método iterativo, o qual utilizou o valor mínimo para as diferenças absolutas entre iterações sucessivas e um número máximo de iterações como critério de parada. A respectiva implementação de todos os elementos do artigo foi realizada em linguagem Python v 3.6.7. Quanto à disposição das inomogeneidades, espaçamentos regulares e espaçamentos com posições e raios aleatórios são dois elementos considerados; quanto às condutividades quatro cenários são considerados em cada caso de disposição. Em todos os elementos, funções aleatórias foram utilizadas para caracterizar as condutividades do meio e de cada uma das inomogeneidades. Os resultados numéricos permitem avaliar a influência dos diversos cenários de condutividades, bem como a respectiva interação com os poços de bombeamento e injeção no caso de disposição aleatória. Além disso, a precisão e o nível de detalhamento que podem ser alcançados ilustram a capacidade do MEA para a caracterização do escoamento e identificação de canais preferenciais. Por fim, uma análise da convergência do algoritmo iterativo é apresentada para os cenários avaliados.

RESUMO Neste artigo o método multigrid algébrico baseado em agregação suavizada, o método clássico de Ruge-Stuben e o método GMRES pré-condicionado por multigrid algébrico foram utilizados para a solução da equação do fluxo livre estacionário em domínio georreferenciado. A disponibilidade dos códigos computacionais permitiu avaliar a aproximação de elementos finitos sob a perspectiva dos métodos multigrid algébricos e respectiva combinação, como pré-condicionante, com o método GMRES. As diferenças máximas entre soluções por diferentes métodos, o tempo necessário para obter as soluções dos sistemas lineares associados, em cada uma das iterações de Picard, os residuais de cada um dos métodos iterativos e os residuais em cada uma das iteradas de Picard são apresentados e discutidos. Como resultado da análise, os métodos pré-condicionados são mais eficientes no sentido do menor tempo computacional aliado à estabilidade do número de iterações. A análise dos residuais das iterações de Picard permite comparar a evolução dos diferentes métodos de solução dos sistemas lineares. O detalhamento dos residuais dos métodos iterativos em cada passo das iterações de Picard permitiu uma visão mais abrangente e uma análise da convergência. Em detalhes, o método baseado em agregação suavizada necessita de um número expressivamente menor de iterações quando comparado ao método clássico de Ruge Stüben nas primeiras iterações de Picard. O pré-condicionamento reduz o número de iterações em relação às iterações iniciais e há uma persistência da redução do número de iterações do método baseado em agregação em relação ao método clássico.

ABSTRACT In this paper, the algebraic multigrid method based on smoothed aggregation, the classical method of Ruge-Stúben and the method GMRES preconditioned by algebraic multigrid were used to solve the steady-state free flow equation in a georeferenced domain. The availability of computer codes allowed us to evaluate the approximation of finite elements from the perspective of algebraic multigrid methods and their combination, as preconditioning, with the GMRES method. The maximum differences between solutions by different methods, the time required to obtain the solutions of the associated linear systems, in each of the Picard iterations, the residuals of each of the iterative methods and the residuals of each of the Picard iterations are presented and discussed. As a result of the analysis, the preconditioned methods are more efficient in the sense of less computational time combined with the stability of the number of iterations. The analysis of the residuals of Picard iterations allows comparing the evolution of the different methods of solving linear systems. The detailing of the residuals of the iterative methods in each step of Picard’s iterations allowed a more comprehensive view and an analysis of convergence. In detail, the method based on smoothed aggregation needs a significantly smaller number of iterations when compared to the classical method of Ruge Stüben in the first iterations of Picard. The preconditioning reduces the number of iterations in relation to the initial iterations and there is a persistence of the reduction in the number of iterations of the aggregation-based method in relation to the classical method.

ABSTRACT In this article, residual indicators were used to characterize the quality of the numerical solution of the advection-diffusion-reaction equation in a saturated porous medium. Both large and small advection regimes were considered. The small advection was exemplified by a problem with constant data, while non-constant data was considered for the large advection regime. In this case, residual quantities associated with the data must be incorporated into the residual estimates related to the spatial approximation and an auxiliary problem must be solved for the correct obtainment of the temporal estimates. The presentation of the residual indicators as a surface on the finite element mesh provides a detailed view of the regions that need refinement, allows to infer the effect of each estimate on the composition of the global estimator and, in addition, allows to follow the evolution of the residual surfaces as the contaminant front advances in the simulation process. In turn, the numerical values of the indicators allow to delimit the elements that will be refined, to compare the magnitude of the contributions among themselves, between different meshes and a better understanding of the composition of the global estimates.

RESUMO Soluções analíticas para um conjunto de problemas envolvendo o fluxo subterrâneo podem ser calculadas por meio do Método de Elementos Analíticos (MEA). A possibilidade de combinar a função potencial em uma única expressão matemática torna o MEA atrativo, pois permite considerar problemas envolvendo aquíferos confinados, não confinados ou a combinação de ambos em uma mesma equação. Neste artigo, o MEA foi utilizado para obter a solução do fluxo subterrâneo sob a ação conjunta de poços de bombeamento e injeção. O código computacional foi formulado para permitir a utilização de dados aleatórios para as vazões, posições e raios dos poços e pode ser utilizado para avaliação de cenários envolvendo o domínio infinito, com fronteiras de carga fixa, barreiras impermeáveis ou a combinação de ambas. Os resultados computacionais ilustram alguns cenários e englobam a influência do fluxo uniforme na configuração das linhas potenciais e de corrente, a utilização da teoria das imagens e o cálculo aproximado das isolinhas através dos pontos de estagnação.

ABSTRACT Analytical solutions to a set of problems involving groundwater flow can be calculated using the analytical element method (MEA). The possibility of combining the potential function in a single mathematical expression makes MEA attractive because it allows us to consider problems involving confined, unconfined aquifers or the combination of both in the same equation. In this paper, the MEA was used to obtain the groundwater flow solution under the joint action of pumping and injection wells. The computational code has been formulated to allow the use of random data for well flow rates, positions and radii and can be used to evaluate scenarios involving the infinite domain with fixed head boundaries, impermeable barriers or a combination of both. The computational results illustrate some scenarios and include the influence of uniform flow on the configuration of potential and stream lines, the use of image theory and the approximate calculation of isolines through stagnation points.

RESUMO A solução automatizada das equações do transporte de contaminantes no interior de um aquífero depende de parâmetros físicos e químico e, principalmente, do campo de velocidades de suas águas subterrâneas. Este campo de velocidades pode ser obtido da solução numérica do modelo matemático que descreve o potencial hidráulico da região de fluxo saturado. Na fase de pré-processamento da solução, o uso de técnicas de geoprocessamento foi aplicado na geração de malhas computacionais com a imposição geoespacial das condições iniciais e de fronteira para simular o comportamento do lençol freático na localidade do contaminante. Neste trabalho, após a transferência do potencial hidráulico, em termos de campo de velocidades para a equação do transporte, um código numérico desenvolvido em Python foi capaz de prever a migração de um contaminante no interior de um aquífero descrevendo a quantidade do poluente através das isolinhas de concentração. Outra contribuição importante das técnicas de geoprocessamento foi observado na padronização e especificação das informações georreferenciadas das várias fontes que forneceram as bases de dados geoespacias para a descrição hidrogeológica da região de estudos.

ABSTRACT The automated solution of contaminant transport equations inside an aquifer depends on physical and chemical parameters and, most importantly, on the groundwater velocity field. Such a field can be obtained from the numerical solution of a mathematical model describing the hydraulic potential of the saturated flux region. In the pre-processing solution step, geoprocessing techniques were applied to produce computational meshes respecting the geospatial constraints of the initial and boundary conditions to simulate the behavior of the water table around the contaminant. In this work, after the hydraulic potential transference - in terms of velocities field for the transport equation -, a Python numerical code was developed to predict the contaminant migration within an aquifer, describing the amount of pollutant through concentration isolines. Another important contribution of the geoprocessing techniques was observed in the standardization and specification of the georeferenced information from several sources, which provided the geospatial database for the hydrogeologic description of the studied area.

Considerando o fato de que o transporte de contaminantes ocorre em regime de pequena advecção, um estimador residual é usado para analisar a equação parabólica que descreve o fenômeno de advecção-difusão-reação em meio poroso saturado. A solução numérica correspondente é obtida pelo método de elementos finitos usando um esquema θ A-estável em código Python. O estimador de erro residual avalia separadamente as partes componentes do erro e permite a análise e comparação das contribuições para o erro residual. Essa análise considera uma sequência de problemas com diferentes números de elementos na malha computacional. As simulações numéricas indicam que o residual do salto é dominante em comparação com outros resíduos estimados e a dominância cresce com o número de elementos na malha e com o tempo. Adicionalmente, o problema considerado requer esforço adicional para o cálculo das contribuições associadas com a projeção L² da função fonte de contaminante no espaço de elementos finitos.

Considering the fact that the transport of contaminants occur in small advection regime, a residual estimator is used to evaluate the parabolic equation that describes the phenomena of advection-diffusion-reaction in the saturated porous medium. The correspondent numerical solution is obtained by the finite element method using the θ A-stable scheme and a Python code. The residual error estimator considers its component parts and enables analysis and comparisons of contributions to residual error.This analysis considers a problem sequence with a different number of elements in computational mesh. As a result of numerical simulations, there is a dominance of the jump residuals compared to other residual estimates and this dominance increases with both, the growth of elements number in the computational mesh and with time. Furthermore, the considered problem requires additional effort for the calculation of contributions associated with the L² projection of the contaminant source function on the finiteelement space.
